Dr. Roman Szucs: The 2010 Silver Jubilee Medal Winner
Dr Roman Szucs of Pfizer Global Research & Development (Sandwich, UK) has been awarded the 2010 Chromatographic Society Jubilee Medal for his important contribution to the promotion of separation science in the UK and Europe.
He obtained his PhD under the supervision of Professors Pat Sandra at the University of Ghent investigating the separation and quantification of hop bitter acids in beer. This was followed by a post-doctoral position at Unilever Research Laboratory in Vlaardingen (The Netherlands) where the focus of his research was on polymer characterisation.
Dr Szucs joined Pfizer in 1997 working in the Separation Technology group and is currently a Research Fellow and head of the New Technologies team in ARD at the Sandwich site. His role and group has evolved over his twelve years at Pfizer but the development and implementation of separation methods and technologies to the Full-Development portfolio continues to be his primary interest. He is Chair of the Science Implementation Panel for the Pfizer Analytical Research Centre programme which includes the Universities of Ghent (Belgium) and Tasmania (Australia). This programme has played an important role in progressing Pfizer’s understanding of the application of cutting-edge analytical science across the organisation’s portfolio. His recent work on understanding the fundamental possibilities and limitations of high pressure-high efficiency separations has been undertaken with the 2009 Jubilee medal winner, Professor Gert Desmet.
His strong presence over a range of industrially-relevant topics in peer-reviewed scientific literature and prominence as a speaker at national and international separation science meetings was a key aspect in his recognition by The Society. Additionally his support of academic research in the UK and Europe was praised by the committee in awarding him the Jubilee medal.
It is anticipated Dr Szucs will be formally presented with the Jubilee medal at the 34th International Symposium on Capillary Chromatography, Riva del Garda, Italy in June 2010.
